ZOOOOOOOM

This week teachers have been using the Zoom app to communicate directly with students and do teaching sessions for reading, writing and maths. Have you used Zoom? What do you think of it?

Answer these questions:

  • Apart from when we’re on lockdown, can you think of some other ways Zoom might be useful for schools? Even when we’re all back in the classroom together, how could Zoom be a good learning tool?
  • What about outside of school? How could Zoom help scientists? Artists? Musicians? The police? Doctors?
  • Is Zoom better or worse than  messaging or phone calls? Why?
  • Can you think of any problems that using Zoom could cause?
  • Can you think of something we could invent that would be better than Zoom (or other video chat apps)? Could there a better way to communicate online?

TECHNOLOGY AND COMMUNICATION

Click the title below to see a video about two kids from different cultures meeting for the first time, and how they use technology to find a way to communicate:

Korean kid and American Kid Meet for the First Time

  • What are some other ways technology can be used to overcome problems like language barriers?
  • What devices or apps have you seen that could help you if you went to a different country?
  • Can you think of a problem or an opportunity that we don’t have technology for?
  • What could we invent to help people when they go to a place where they don’t know the language or culture?

HAPPY FRIDAY ROOM 13!

(and everybody else!)

Over the last five weeks I’ve been staying with family a little bit outside of the city. We have five people here, but also LOTS of animals – a cat, a dog, a bird, some chickens and even some sheep:

Leave me a comment and tell me a bit about where you’re staying and some of the things you’ve been doing to keep busy (except for school work, of course).

STAY AWESOME

ON DECK FOR FITNESS

Here’s a simple activity you can use to keep active while you’re at home.

All you need is a space to exercise and a deck of playing cards. You decide how many cards you want to use (five? ten? twenty?) but remember that each card you use is another set of exercises to do.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS

Each suit in the deck represents a different exercise:

  • SPADES equals PUSH UPS (remember to bend your elbows and get as close to the ground as you can)
  • DIAMONDS equals STAR JUMPS
  • CLUBS equals SQUATS (go slowly, don’t jump or bounce)
  • HEARTS equals BURPEES

The number on the card tells you how many to do. So if you draw the SIX OF HEARTS, you do SIX BURPEES. Picture cards (Jack, Queen and King) are worth TEN.

Decide how many cards to use (five is a good number, but you could try ten) and draw them one at a time to see the exercises you’re going to do.

HAVE FUN

STAY SAFE

STAY AWESOME

Oops! Almost forgot!

Here are the answers to the brain teasers I put up a few days ago:

1: What has many keys, but can’t open a single lock? A piano.

2: What runs all the way around the back yard but never moves? A fence.

3: The longer it goes, the shorter it gets. What is it? A candle.

HAPPY FRIDAY, ROOM 13!

I’ve shared some reading activities with you on Google Drive (I wanted to put them straight onto this page but it would have been a bit confusing trying to find which activity was yours).

Each text comes with some questions and a hands-on activity at the end.

If anyone doesn’t have their Google Drive login or can’t log on, email me at robp@manurewasouth.school.nz

Parents: Your children can do these independently or with you. If working with them, ask them to read you the text and support them where necessary. You can check their comprehension by asking them the questions attached.

Here are the groups and the title of your activity:

  • Cquince
  • Diamond
  • Esther

GOOD MORNING, ROOM 13!

(Well, technically I’m writing this in the afternoon.)

Been missing my class the last few weeks (I even miss the NOISE) and I wish we could start the term together in class, but at least this way we can keep on working even when we’re all stuck at home. I’ll be putting all kinds of things on here to keep you learning and help you out as much as I can.

I already know we’re the best class at figuring out brain teasers, so here’s a couple to get you started (NO CHEATING):

1: What has many keys, but can’t open a single lock?

2: What runs all the way around the back yard but never moves?

3: The longer it goes, the shorter it gets. What is it?

I’ll post the answers on Friday afternoon.

STAY AWESOME
