Maths – With Whaea Jas

Daily Warm Up!

Set a 2 minute timer. See how many questions you can answer before the time runs out! You don’t need to copy these equations out, just remember to number your answers from 1-15.

Try to get faster every day!!

  1. 5+__=5        2. 3+__=5        3. 3+__=4              4. 4+__=5        5. 6+__=6        6. 3+__=6              7. 5+__=10        8. 1+__=4        9. 9+__=10        10. 1+__=7        11. 5+__=9        12. 5+__=6        13. 4+__=8        14. 2+__=4        15. 5+__=6

Record your time or how many questions you were able to answer! See if you can beat it next time!

How did you go? Let me know if you need help!

Activity

See if you remember what numbers add up to 10.

6+__=10          __+7=10          0+10=          9+__=10          5+__=10          __+2=10

Now add up to 20.

11+9=          15+5=          13+7=          10+10=          18+2=          14+6=          12+8=          17+3=          19+1=          16+4=          20+0=          5+15=          9+11=          7+13=          2+18=          6+14=          8+12=          3+17=          1+19=          4+16=          0+20=

Challenge

Use what you know from above to fill in the blanks to make 20. Use the number line pic above to help if you get stuck!!

5+__=20          18+__=20          16+__=20          __+20=20          __+10=20          __+19=20          17+__=20            __+11=20          12+__=20          20+__=20          __+6=20          15+__=20          7+__=20          10+__=20

Are you getting the hang of adding to make 10 and 20?

How are you going at filling in the blanks?

I’d really like to hear about it in the comments section!!

Welcome to Lego Writing

Yesterday was Mother’s Day… A day to show gratitude to not only the mums but also to the Aunties, Sisters or Nans who are like a Mum to us too!!!! And I want to know how you celebrated that special lady in your life.

What to do…

Look at the lego pictures below…. They are some of the things that made me feel special yesterday. Do you know what they are?

Activity 1

  1. Did you give your mum any flowers or make her favourite meal?
  2. Write a short paragraph about what you did yesterday and how you made her feel special.

Activity 2

  1. Choose one of the following to complete – List at least 3 things you know about her OR 3 reasons why you are grateful for her.

My mum’s name is Leonie. She is kind, considerate and often too generous! Her favourite colour is blue and she loves to read. She is very creative and always has something artsy in the works, perhaps that’s where I get it from.

Did you make either of the food items above?

Let me know how you are going, in the comments section 🙂

DMIC PROBLEM: How Much Pizza?

Warm Up Activity

Which is bigger: The floor or the wall?

Look at the room you’re in. Look at the floor, then the biggest (longest) wall. Which one has a bigger surface area? How could you find out? You could figure out the area of the floor by walking it and counting the steps, but you can’t walk on walls – so what else could you try?

Put your guess in the comments. If you’ve got a good way of finding a proper answer, tell us what it is.

DMIC Activity

How Much Pizza?

I had a party with eleven of my friends, so I ordered some pizza. I expected two round pizzas one cut into twelve slices, but when it arrived it was a HUGE rectangle shaped pizza. If I have twelve people to feed, how do I make sure everyone gets the same amount?

We measured the pizza and found that it was 120 centimetres long and 90 centimetres wide.

  • What’s the area of the pizza? Show how you worked this out.
  • What’s the best way to cut it up so twelve people get the same amount?

STEPS:

  • Read the question.
  • Watch this video to help you understand the problem:

  • Solve the problem and show your working.
  • Watch this video to find out Mr Pegler’s way of solving it (but make sure you try to solve it yourself first):
  • Now try the problem again with these questions:
    • What if the pizza was twice the size?
    • What if there were only five people?
    • What if the pizza was SQUARE – 120cm by 120cm?

I Can Make That!

Do you cook at home, or make food for your family? Would you like to? Reading is a big part of cooking because you have to be able to read a recipe and understand what it’s telling you to do.

  • If you know a recipe, write it down.
  • If someone at home can teach you a recipe, get them to write it down so you can read it.
  • If you have no recipes at home, find one here (remember to check with an adult when you’re going online).
  • Once you’ve got your recipe, share it in a comment.

What Did Kids Eat 100 Years Ago?

Watch this video about what kids in Sydney ate in the early 1900’s (about 100 years ago):

CLICK HERE TO WATCH Growing up in the early 1900s: Meals

QUESTIONS

  • What did the kids eat?
  • Why do you think they didn’t have much food?
  • Where do you think they got it?
  • How is this different from what kids eat today?
  • How has technology changed the way we eat?

 ACTIVITY

How do you think food will have changed in 100 years? What will people eat, and how will they make it? Use these headings to tell me what breakfast, lunch and dinner might look like in 2120:

Breakfast in 2120:

Lunch in 2120:

Dinner in 2120:

CRAZY RECIPES

Read this recipe for Elephant Stew. Would you like to try making it?

Now read this recipe for tacos, written by a pre-school kid named Joe (who doesn’t really like tacos). Could you make tacos from Joe’s recipe?

Now write your own crazy recipe. It might be for dragon stew, deep-fried rocks or zombie cookies. Use the template below.

(Remember, this is just for fun. You’re not going to actually make this recipe, so make it as crazy as you want.)

Do You Want Fries With That?

This is Steve Mallie, from Mallie’s Bar & Grill in Detroit. He holds the record for making the world’s biggest burger. You can order it from the menu, but:

  • It’s three feet high and five feet wide
  • It weighs more than 800 kg
  • It takes three days to make
  • Steve had to build a special grill to make the giant beef patty
  • It costs 8,000 dollars

ACTIVITY

Steve’s burger could probably feed an entire class, but what other giant food could be on the menu?

Imagine you want to make a giant takeaway item to feed your class with. It could be a giant pizza, a giant Subway sub, a giant taco, a giant wrap, or just about anything else.

  • How big would it have to be?
  • What kind of ingredients would you need?
  • How long would it take to make it?
  • What special equipment would you need?
  • What would it cost?
